Tea planters' talks fail

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Talks between the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and tea planters here on Tuesday failed to resolve the deadlock arising out of an indefinite strike by workers in the tea gardens of north Bengal. More than 3,00,000 tea garden workers employed in nearly 300 regular and 1200 small tea gardens in north Bengal have ceased work, demanding a revision in wages that they claim is due since April 1, 2003.

"We are trying our best to sort out the problem," Mr. Bhattacharjee said after the meeting. The discussions revolved around minimum wages for tea workers and increasing productivity. It has also been decided that a tripartite meeting among the tea garden managements, the workers unions and the State Government be held on July 14 in an attempt to resolve the stalemate. The Chief Minister appealed to the workers and the representatives of the tea managements to sit together and sort out their differences.
