IMPHAL: Student organisations in Manipur launched a major drive in the markets here on Tuesday to check hike in prices of essential commodities caused by the indefinite economic blockade imposed by the All-Naga Students Association of Manipur (ANSAM). Most traders had hiked the prices of essentials, mostly food items. Members of the All-Manipur Students' Union, Manipuri Students' Federation and the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur went around the market areas and appealed to the traders not to sell goods at exorbitant rates. The students checked the receipt books. The chamber of commerce too had promised help in the drive to check prices. Over a hundred organisations have appealed to ANSAM to lift the blockade in view of the hardships faced by the people. The organisation had stopped movement of vehicles on the national highways. Only NH-39 is open in Manipur. UNI
