Sonu still going strong

Bollywood singer, Sonu Nigam, does not believe in doing things in a hurry. In fact, before giving the go-ahead to any song or musical venture, he makes sure that an in-depth analysis has been made.

This is one reason why the singer has succeeded in remaining in the Hindi music lovers' hearts even when quite a few new playback singers have emerged on the scene.

Sonu, who was at the WorldSpace Satellite Radio's launch in the Capital this past week, said: "I waited for a long time before coming out with the video album `Chanda Ki Doli'. I undertook a survey with the help of my friends about what actually Hindi music lovers are looking for in a video album. I came to know that besides the visual appeal, they expected a romantic song that had classical, pop and Sufi in it. To fulfil public expectations I not only sang and acted in the album but also composed the songs."

Sonu revealed that for a long time he was refusing to do any video album so as to avoid turning stale on the small screen. "I felt there was an overdose of video albums. I was also busy doing three Hindi films, "Indian Idol" and world shows," added Sonu.

With a twinkle in his eye, Sonu -- who has seen the ups and down of being a star in the highly competitive world of Bollywood -- said that the demand for an entertaining song needs to be more than supply.

Though Sonu is singing for Bollywood's leading stars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, his attempts to establish himself as an actor in the Hindi film industry have come to a naught.

However, even though he has given three flops at the box office, Sonu does not show disappointment. He feels patience is the best virtue.

"I am in no hurry to sign a Hindi film. The critics loved my performance in the film `Love In Nepal'. However, there was something wrong with the promotion of the movie. It was released nine months after its completion. So now I have become more cautious before signing any film project," adds Sonu. -- Madhur Tankha
