Fireworks from France

Fireworks the French way. Well, that is exactly what the Capital will get to witness for the first time this year, with the Embassy of France deciding to make its National Day celebrations a little more grand. From glittering fireworks to a musical night that will have a DJ playing catchy French and Indian numbers to keep everyone on their toes, this July 14 has much action and drama in store for the special invitees. Kicking off the event will be the conferment of prestigious awards on acclaimed and well-established Indians from the field of art and science.

The Chevalier de la legion d'honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) will be conferred on Prof. C.N.Rao, president of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Research, Bangalore. Considered the most prestigious national honour in France, the Legion of Honour will be given to Prof. Rao, the first Indian member of the prestigious French Academy of Science, in recognition of his instrumental role in achieving significant milestones in Indo-French scientific collaboration. The Officier de l'ordre National du Merite (Officer of the National Order of Merit) will be given to former director of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, M.C.Gupta, who paved the way for close cooperation between IIPA and its French counterpart ENA. Architect M.N.Sharma will be taking home the Officier de l'ordre des Arts and Lettres (Knight of Order of Arts and Letters), while danseuse Mallika Sarabhai and Alarmel Valli along with writer Nirmal Varma and artist Naresh Kapuria will be awarded the Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts and Lettres (Knight of Order of Arts and Letters). -- Lakshmi B.
