Yan upsets Domachowska

MODENA: China's Yan Zi upset fourth-seeded Marta Domachowska of Poland 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 in the first round of the Modena International on Monday.

The 231st-ranked Yan gained momentum in the second-set tiebreak and cruised past 51st-ranked Domachowska, for her best win since October 2003, when she beat No. 52-ranked Ashley Harkleroad in Japan. It was also only Yan's second win on the main WTA Tour this year. Domachowska was the finalist at Strasbourg, France in May.

Earlier, France's Emilie Loit won 6-2, 6-3 over Ukraine's Alyona Bondarenko, who was coming off a third-round appearance in her Wimbledon debut, and Zuzana Ondraskova of the Czech Republic defeated Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-3. Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta, the tournament's top two seeds, play their first-round matches on Tuesday, having led Italy to a 3-2 win over the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup over the weekend.

The Modena tournament is in its 22nd year, but for the first time on the senior tour.
