Indians impress

CAPE TOWN: : Indian grapplers dominated the mat, with both the men and women's teams winning the freestyle title and the men winning in the Greco-Roman section, at the South African Centenary wrestling championships held at the University of Stellenbosch.

India finished with an impressive tally of 17 gold with five in men's freestyle, six in women's freestyle and as many in men's Greco-Roman categories.

It also won nine silver and three bronze to have a tally of 29 medals.

Though the host put up a gritty show to finish second, it was the Indian wrestlers who ruled the roost in the just-concluded three-day tournament.

In addition to the Commonwealth teams, there were entries from Germany and Uganda in the tournament.

India's results:

Women's freestyle: 48 kg: 1. Nirmal; 51 kg: 1. Meena; 55 kg: 1. Neha Rathi; 59 kg: 1. Alka Tomar; 63 kg: 1. Usha; 67 kg: 2. Anita; 72 kg: 1. Jyoti.
