Gaurav, Tarun in joint lead

NOIDA: Gaurav Pratap Singh of Delhi and Tarun Ghogale of Pune were tied at the top of the leaderboard on the opening day of the Northern India Open amateur golf championship at the Noida golf course here on Tuesday. Both returned par rounds.

Vikrant Chopra, Simarjeet Singh and Divij Talwar shot identical 74 on a rainy day to be right behind the leading duo.

Ghogale, who teed off from the tenth hole, began poorly with as bogeys on the tenth and 12th. He took the turn at two over, but on his return carded two birdies, on the third and fourth, to have his par for the opening round.

Gaurav, who started on the first tee, also started poorly with bogeys on the first two holes, but he recovered somewhat with a birdie on the fourth. He was however three over by the tenth before coming back with a birdie spree from the 14th to the 18th.

The scores: Tarun Ghogale and Gaurav Pratap Singh 72; Simarjeet Singh, Vikrant Chopra and Divij Talwar 74; Anirvan Lahiri, Jasjeet Singh, Chirag Kumar and Vikram Rana 75. — Special Correspondent
