Uncertainty over economic census

G. Nagaraja

Boycott threat by teachers, issue of ration cards may affect the exercise

  • Census scheduled to be held between July 15 and July 31
  • The exercise will be held after a gap of six years
  • Teachers say their involvement in the exercise will affect academic activity
  • They say they are already burdened with `non-academic' activity like revision of voter lists and election duties

ELURU: The threat of boycott by school teachers and the ongoing distribution of computerised ration cards are likely to cast a shadow over conduct of the Fifth Economic Census in West Godavari district. The census is scheduled to commence on July 15 and last till July 31 all over the country after a gap of six years. The census is aimed at collecting data by conducting door-to-door survey to help the Central Government in planning preparations, evolving economic indicators, assessing Gross Domestic Product etc. The State Government has planned to carry out the census in the State with the active involvement of the Education, Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration and Planning Departments. The MROs in rural areas and municipal commissioners in urban areas will act as charge officers for the survey.

    Training programme

According to the district Chief Planning Officer, S. Satyanarayana, the district administration has planned drafting of over 3,000 school teachers for the survey to work as enumerators and supervisors. He said the recent training programmes conducted by the Planning Department in five mandals as a prelude to the census had been a low-key affair because of poor participation by teachers.

The district units of the United Teachers' Federation (UTF) and the Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation (APTF) are preparing ground to enforce the boycott in protest against the involvement of teachers in the survey. Already the teachers were overburdened with extra-classes after school hours for slow-learners, it was said.
