Fall in flow into Mettur dam

CHENNAI : Though the flow into the Mettur dam on Tuesday night came down to 12,326 cusecs, Public Works Department authorities here are hopeful of the quantum improving further, as the discharge from the Kabini dam was of the order of 20,000 cusecs. The flow into the Kabini dam on Tuesday evening was 16,676 cusecs. As the reservoir was almost full, the discharge would continue to be heavy, they said.

The storage in the Mettur dam stood at 25.757 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) as against the capacity of 93.4 tmcft. — Special Correspondent

Reshuffle

CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu Government on Tuesday shuffled a few Deputy Inspectors-General of police. P. Bhaskar has been posted as DIG, Headquarters, Chennai. He was till now DIG, Human Rights/Social Justice CID. Sunil Kumar will be the new DIG, Human Rights/Social Justice CID. N. Chenbaharaman has been posted as DIG, Training, Chennai. Prem Anand Sinha, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), Tiruchi, has been posted as ASP, Tiruvadanai sub-division, Ramanathapuram district. Anisa Husain, ASP, PEW, Tiruvallur, has been posted as ASP, Coonoor sub-division, Nilgiris district. — Special Correspondent

Station Masters stage demonstration

CHENNAI: Station masters, affiliated to the All-India Station Masters Association, staged a demonstration in front of the Divisional Railway Manger's office here seeking removal of 12-hour duty rosters and posting of additional station masters at all stations to ensure safety.

The divisional president of the association, John Vincent Kumar, and the all-India general secretary, M. Ramani, participated. Demonstrations were also held in Tiruchi and Madurai. — Special Correspondent

Term extended

CHENNAI: The State Government on Monday notified a three-month extension of tenure of the Commission of Inquiry looking into the death of Venkatesan Pannaiar. The Commission will now get 24 months instead of the earlier 21 months. — Special Correspondent

Aid announced

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday extended financial assistance to three needy persons belonging to Tirunelveli and Theni districts.

She handed over the order for release of Rs. 5 lakhs to Parameswari, a physically challenged girl student of St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School at Anayarkulam in Tirunelveli district, for her higher education. She presented the order for release of Rs. 1 lakh to Maadamuthu, a mentally retarded boy in T. Suppulapuram village in Theni district to meet his medical expenditure. The funds released from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund would be deposited in the Tamil Nadu Power Development Corporation. The beneficiaries can draw the monthly interests against the deposited amount for their expenses, says an official release. The Chief Minister handed over a cheque for Rs. 25,000 to Raja of Bodinaickenur, who suffered from stunted growth and was only a little above one metre tall. — Special Correspondent

PMK chief's charge

CHENNAI: The State Government is not sincere about enacting laws aimed at providing social justice, the Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, S. Ramadoss, said on Tuesday. He was reacting to Education Minister C.Ve. Shanmugam's statement on scrapping of the Common Entrance Test for admission to professional courses. — Special Correspondent

Driver dies in tanker-bus smash

Thanjavur : The driver of an oil tanker, Ilangovan (33), died on the spot, when the tanker collided head-on with a private tourist bus at Mathur near Ayyampettai on the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam road on Tuesday. Anthoni, cleaner, was injured and admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. His condition was said to be out of danger. No one in the bus was injured. The Ayyampettai police have registered a case. — Special Correspondent.

Bid to picket Collectorate

PERAMBALUR : Residents of Keeranur near here attempted to picket the Collectorate on Monday protesting a wrong entry in the name of a residential area found in the renewed ration cards, which were distributed to them in the last couple of days.

The villagers including women came to Perambalur by tractors and marched towards the Collectorate raising slogans. They said the name of their residential area had been wrongly entered in the cards as Nova Nagar instead of Keeranur. This caused confusion among the youths who wanted to register themselves with the District Employment Exchange as well as for obtaining passport, they said.

Padayatra ends

Tuticorin: The four-day long `padayatra,' organised by the `Joint Action Committee for Tamirabarani and groundwater conservation,' a consortium of 42 trade unions, farmers' associations and non-governmental organisations culminated at Authoor near here on Tuesday.

The yatra, which started at Papanasam in Tirunelveli district on Saturday, was conducted to protest the proposed establishment of a Coco-Cola bottling unit at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district. — Staff Reporter

Mobile PCOs

Nagercoil: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) here has invited applications to run mobile public call office in the Nagercoil SSA, said P.Vijaya Kumaran, General Manager.

In a press release, he said that anyone including existing STD/ISD PCO franchisees were eligible to send applications. However, mobile PCO holders have to install a fixed cellular terminal including bill printing mechanism.

Interested persons can obtain applications including commission details from the Customer care centres, Vadaserry and Marthandam. — Staff Reporter

Demonstration

Nagercoil: Autorickshaw drivers, affiliated to the Centre for Indian Trade Union, staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Tuesday urging the Government to find an early solution to their multi-point charter of demands including setting up of a separate welfare board for their benefit and fixing minimum fare for autos.

Girl kidnapped

Tuticorin: The police are on the look out for six persons on the charge of kidnapping Chandralekha at Keelapoovani near here on July 7. Police sources said a case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Sukarammal, mother of Chandralekha, at Puliampatti police station on Monday that her daughter was kidnapped by Murugan and five other identified persons during late hours of July 7. — Staff Reporter

13 gamblers held

Tuticorin: The police have arrested 13 gamblers from a lodge situated in the heart of the town during surprise raids conducted here in the wee hours of Tuesday today.

According to police, the accused, split into two groups led by one Raja and Ravindran, were taken into the custody while they were indulging in gambling at various rooms in the lodge. They were creating nuisance to other inmates of the lodge, officials added. — Staff Reporter

Cyclist dies

Tuticorin: An unidentified vehicle knocked down Prabhakaran (30), a cyclist, fatally here in the wee hours of Tuesday while he was traversing through Koramballam. — Staff Reporter

Demonstration against import policy planned

ERODE: The Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam will organise a demonstration on July 25 in front of the Collectorate in protest against the import policy of the Union and State Governments.

A meeting of the sangam demanded the District Collector to ask Aavin here to procure all the milk supplied by milk producers.

The meeting demanded the Government to introduce ethanol mixed petrol.
