Maternity clinic in Thousand Lights in disuse: Stalin

Staff Reporter

Building has no doors, windows and equipment, says DMK leader The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs from the Central Chennai Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund

CHENNAI: : A maternity and child clinic constructed six years ago in Sardarjung Garden in Thousand Lights is now in a state of disuse, deputy general secretary of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, M.K. Stalin, has said.

The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs from the Central Chennai Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund provided by the former Union Minister, Murasoli Maran. It was equipped with all the necessary equipment.

Mr. Stalin said that during a visit to the area on Monday, he found the building in disuse. The equipment was missing and the building did not have doors and windows, he said in a statement.

Soon after the AIADMK Government took over, the doctor at the clinic was removed and the watchman was not paid his salary. The locality had a dominant Muslim population and the residents had been demanding the facility for a long time, he said.

In the same area, residents were often turned away at an automatic kerosene bunk run by the Civil Supplies Corporation on the plea that it did not have stock.

But several complaints were received from local residents who said the bunk sold about 200 litres of kerosene every alternate day in the black market.

Complaints to the authorities had not yielded results, Mr. Stalin said.
