VCTL readies mega plans

By R. Sampath

Proposal to double throughput

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakha Container Terminal Private Limited, promoted by the Dubai Ports International and the United Line Agencies of India, proposes to achieve a throughput of 70,000 to 80,000 TEUs (20-feet equivalent units) in the current year.

According to VCTL sources, this means nearly doubling its throughput over that of the last year, when the terminal located in Visakhapatnam port handled 45,517 TEUs.

``We have registered a 125 per cent growth since the installation of the terminal two years ago,'' its spokesman told The Hindu on Tuesday.

The terminal's optimism is engendered by the regular business of 180 TEUs--equally shared by exports and imports--generated by the inland container depot at Tughlaqabad, near Delhi, every week.

Favourable development

Another favourable development for the VCTL is the promise by the Indflex Service to arrange transhipment at Viskahapatnam of China-bound container cargoes, ranging between 1,000-1,500 TEUs, from Kolkata and Paradip ports. (The Indflex Service is jointly operated by the Shipping Corporation of India, Pacific International Limited and K Line, and transhipment is done at Visakhapatnam and Chennai ports every week).

Yet another bright spot for the VCTL is the Hyderabad-based Seaways Shipping Limited's proposal to operate a circular North Bay of Bengal Service connecting Visakhapatnam, Kolkata, Mongla (Myanmar), Chittagong (Bangladesh) and Visakhapatnam ports. This service will touch Visakhaptnam every 10 days, transporting 227 TEUs.

``The VCTL is hopeful of securing more container business from the eastern and northern States in the months to come. All these will add up to more than double the throughput achieved last year,'' the spokesman said.
