Rotary Club offers a helping hand for Akshaya Patra

BANGALORE: The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which is promoted by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and feeds close to 1,00,000 poor children in and around Bangalore, has received a boost.

The organisation has been offered a helping hand by the Rotary Club in the city and from the Rotary Club of Flint, US. The club's assistance will be in the form of "matching grants", the US entity of the club will match every donation made by their Indian counterparts.

A consortium, consisting of the Rotary Club of Flint, US; the Rotary Club of Bangalore; Rotary Districts 6330 and 3190 and the Rotary Foundation donated an Eicher truck and stainless steel serving vessels, altogether worth Rs. 12 lakhs.

The new vehicle will be used to distribute midday meals to over 5,000 underprivileged children in Bangalore.

Receiving the donation, Chanchalapathi Das, president of the ISKCON Temple and vice-chairman of the foundation, said: "We are grateful to Rotary Club for helping us bring a smile on the faces of thousands of children. With the support of such organisations we are confident of reaching out to many more needy children.''

He specially acknowledged the efforts of Hanuman Marur of Paschima Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Flint, US, for their support.

The president of the Rotary Club of Bangalore said: "We appreciate the efforts of the Akshaya Patra team in providing underprivileged children with hygienic and nutritious meals every day. At Rotary we have always been committed to the cause of providing a better life to children are glad to provide a helping hand.''
