HYDERABAD: A ministerial committee has been constituted to ensure smooth conduct of "Kalachakra" initiation ceremony 2006 of the Buddhists at Amaravati in Guntur district.

The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, will be the chairman of the committee which will have Ministers - K. Lakshminarayana (Co-operation), J. Geeta Reddy (Tourism) as its vice-chairmen. The Guntur Collector will be the member-secretary.

The Minister for Religious Affairs in the Cabinet of Dalai Lama will be the special invitee, a press release from the Chief Minister's Office said on Tuesday.

Kalachakra, the biggest gathering of Buddhists, would commemorate the 2,550th year Buddha attained nirvana. The Dalai Lama would give Kalachakra empowerment to his disciples at the ceremony to be held from January 4 to 16. It is being organised by Norbulinga Institute, Dharmashala, under the patronage of Busshokai Centre of Kanenazava, Japan.

The Chief Minister, Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who reviewed the arrangements at a meeting, directed officials to launch works pertaining to widening of Guntur-Amaravati road, conversion of Amaravati-Sattenapalli road into two-lane one and widening of Vijayawada-Amaravati road via Mangalagiri (20 km) and via Tadikonda (20 km).

He also constituted a high-level committee headed by Mr. Rosaiah to celebrate Satya Sai Baba's birthday on November 23. He agreed in principle to take up laying of roads in Anantapur with an estimated cost of Rs.12.64 crores and improving sanitation facilities (costing Rs.3 crores).
