GULBARGA: In the age of fast cars, 60-year-old Mappanna finds his five-year-old pony a dependable mode of transport. Mr. Mappanna, who has never stepped into a motor vehicle in his life, is a cynosure of all eyes in his native town of Malkhed, which was once the capital city of the Rashtrakuta dynasty. His dependence on his faithful companion is legendary. He does not even think of travelling by any other mode of transport. "Since my early days, I have been using horses for travelling to my agriculture field, 5 km. away from Malkhed, and I feel uncomfortable travelling by any other mode of transport for performing my daily duties in the agriculture field or attending marriages and functions," said Mr. Mappanna. He hails from a small family of agriculturists that owns 2.5 acres of rain-fed land. He replaces the horse once it gets old. "The horses have never failed me all these years and why should I shift to other mode of transport," he asked. Father of four, Mr. Mappanna's sons are involved in transport business and one of his sons even owns a lorry. But Mr. Mappanna is yet to step into the vehicle. The inspiration for Mappanna to use horse as a mode of transport was Basappa Tegaltippi of Malkhed, who owned several horses and used them as mode of transport. "I had seen Basappa Tegaltippi riding majestically on his horseback with awe when I was young and I dreamt of owning a horse since my childhood and wanted to use them for personal transport," he said. His transport has its own drawbacks; Mr. Mapanna has missed some marriages and family functions in far off places because it is not possible to ride to those places.
