Minister denies reports that the Government is planning to split the corporation

  • YSR seeks reconstruction report in three weeks
  • Says he is against privatisation
  • Sub-committee denies reports of possible split

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday directed appointment of an expert committee to look into the woes of APSRTC and submit a reconstruction report in three weeks.

This decision followed a meeting with the Cabinet sub-committee consisting of S. Santosh Reddy, Konathala Ramakrishna and Jakkampudi Ramamohan Rao who briefed him on the talks it had held with the Joint Action Committee of RTC trade unions. The members of the committee are yet to be named.

Dr. Reddy made it clear that he wanted the APSRTC to be turned into a profitable and viable unit so that the interests of the people as well at the 1.17 lakh strong workforce would be safeguarded.

He wanted the sub-committee to take all possible measures to strengthen the corporation.

Mr. Ramakrishna, earlier, denied reports that the Government was planning to split the corporation into three or four regions.

He held that Mr. Ramamohan Rao and himself had been misquoted.

They had merely observed that the sub-committee was open to suggestions from people and that they would be examined.

This did not mean the Government had decided to split the corporation.

Soon after Tuesday's talks were adjourned, the JAC members said they had reiterated the demands and that the sub-committee had said it would get back to them. "Let the Ministers talk to the Chief Minister. We can only hope for a solution," they said.
