For king of action, direction is a passion

S.R. Ashok Kumar

I do not smoke or drink in real life and avoid depicting them in films too

Arjun... family is foremost

`Action King' Arjun's formula for a winner is clear — combine action and sentiment that touches the heart of fans, especially those who love family drama. On the eve of his latest release "Chinna", Arjun talks about his winning formula, speaking about what's in store for him in the near future.

I am a simple person, possessive and God-fearing. I want to be nice to everybody, inculcate clean habits and have been following all these till date.

My name in school and college was Ashok Babu. When I entered filmdom, I was renamed Arjun. I was a good athlete and health freak in college. I used to do regular exercise to keep my body fit.

Being a die-hard Bruce Lee fan, I learnt Karate and Kung fu after joining a marital arts school and even got an orange belt after three years. The training process was rigid and tough. I was good at it and won a distinction. One of my early films, "Yaar" was released and the title `Action King' Arjun appeared for first time.

My latest release "Chinna" is a commercial film with all box-office ingredients. I play an anti-hero, a rough and tough fisherman, who falls in love with a girl. He is possessive about his lover. The problem he faces forms the rest of the gripping story.

My wife is homemaker and I have two daughters, one studying in standard X and the other standard V. I am a good father to my kids. For me family is foremost and hence I try to spend as much time as possible with my children and wife.

So far, I have done 120 films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. My success rate is good so now have begun to get good offers.

I have directed "Sevagan", "Prathab", "Jai Hind", "Thaayin Manikodi", "Vedam", "Parasuram", and "Ezhumalai" and now "Madarasi". For me film direction is a passion. It is a creative job, which I like to do often.

After seeing "Mera Nam Joker" I wanted to direct a movie. I love films of Bhim Singh and Sridhar. Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan and Amitabh Bachchan are my favourite actors while Savithri, Madhuri and Kajol are my favourite actresses.

One should be patriotic about his country. I want to incorporate patriotism in the media through films and I am happy that I am doing it in a phased manner. Nearly all my films will have the message of patriotism.

I do not smoke or drink in real life and avoid depicting them in films too. From my early age I was determined not to smoke. Even as a director I reject the idea of smoking in film. But if I am working for some other productions I tell the director not to show people smoking in films.

As for long term ... I have not set any goals. I wanted to be a police officer but I became an actor. I did not dream that I would direct a film. I did not want to be a producer. That too happened. I go where fate takes me.
