Bangarappa predicts fall of UPA Government

Says third front will form the next Govt. with support from the Left

MYSORE: S. Bangarappa, former Chief Minister and the President of the Samajwadi Party's State unit, has predicted the collapse of Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) by early next year.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Bangarappa said the third front, which is taking a "definite shape," will succeed the UPA Government.

The third front is only waiting for the requisite strength of 272 members in the Lok Sabha to form the next Government, he said.

Referring to the continuing differences of opinion between the Congress and the Left over several issues, including disinvestment, Mr. Bangarappa said the UPA Government is tottering. "Several rounds of talks between the President of the All India Congress Committee, Sonia Gandhi, and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Prakash Karat, have failed to thrash out a compromise. The collapse of the UPA Government is inevitable," he said.

He said elections to the Kerala and West Bengal State Assemblies, due in early 2006, will hasten the demise of the Union Government, as the Congress will be pitted against the Left parties in the elections in these two crucial states.

"It will be impossible for the two parties to continue in the coalition at the Centre and fight the Assembly elections against each other in the States at the same time," the former Chief Minister said.

He also said that the collapse of the UPA Government will pave the way for the Third Front to come to power with support from the Left.

Though he did not identify the parties or political leaders who would constitute the Third Front, Mr. Bangarappa said the non-Congress non-BJP formation will a few leaders presently part of the UPA Government.
