ERODE: Three hundred check dams would be built in the district, mainly in the dry tracts at a cost of Rs. 5 crores and the construction would be completed in five years, said the Joint Director of Agriculture, T.S.R. Ramakrishnan. The works were being implemented under the Watershed Development Programme. Mr. Ramakrishnan said so far Rs. 1.30 crore has been granted by the Union and State Governments for the same and with this 100 check dams were constructed. The remaining would be built within the next three years. Mr. Ramakrishnan said because of the formation of 100 check dams, the ground water level has risen. In Kalingarayan ayacut area the farmers were busy raising nurseries, he said adding this year all ayacuts would get sufficient water for irrigation.
