CPI (M) seeks clarification

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, make a statement on the alleged payments made to Volkswagen and Vasishta Wahan to clarify the doubts on the issue.

The media reports and the "unconvincing" replies given by the Minister concerned as well as the Chief Minister himself are fuelling apprehensions about "kickbacks" in the deal, the CPI (M) Polit Bureau member and the party's State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, said.

Speaking to reporters, who met him on Wednesday, he objected to the way Dr. Reddy was taking the issue "lightly," claiming that the amount involved was only Rs. 11 crores. The issue was a serious one, as the amounts were paid before registering the unit. Dr. Reddy should understand that more than the amount involved, the misuse of public funds mattered the most.
