COIMBATORE: The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, C. Ramasamy, has called for the constitution of a body to regulate the supply and distribution of seeds in the State. "In the State there is no agency to assess the real demand of seeds required for different crops," he told The Hindu on Wednesday. If a body could forecast seed requirements and arrange for production by giving targets to the university and private agencies, "we can plan better, assess the growing demands in a particular area and reduce wastage," Dr. Ramasamy said. In the absence of this body, there was no control over the quality of seeds produced. Describing the seed germination and distribution chain, he said: "Plant breeders at the university produce breeder seeds first, which are then passed on to the Department of Agriculture and Horticulture or private seed companies for further multiplication into foundation seeds, which are given to certified seed producers to distribute to the farmers."
Informal channels
Yet, seeds reached a farmer through informal channels. "In Tamil Nadu, certified seed adoption is only 16 per cent," he added. "In the case of horticultural crops, some nurseries do not maintain the right pedigree for grafts," he said. In some cases, new vegetable seed varieties were introduced and there was no body to check the quality, he said.
