COIMBATORE: The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (AVP), a city-based Ayurveda hospital, along with University of Washington, University of California, Los Angeles, and John Hopkins Medicine, has submitted a proposal to upgrade it into a research hospital. The proposal includes facilities for clinical trails in the area of rheumatoid arthritis, painful diabetic neuropathy and hepatitis C, the AVP managing director, P. R. Krishnakumar, told reporters on Tuesday.
Study
According to P. Ram Manohar Reddy, director of Arya Vaidya Trust Institute for Advanced Research (AVTAR), the research wing of AVP, many U.S. citizens were opting for some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Quoting from a study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S., he said 42 per cent of the U.S. citizens opted for this system of medicine.
Research tie-up
Since CAM was not a formal system of medicine in the U.S., NIH had entered into collaborative research on traditional medicines in countries of their origin such as India, China, Japan and Korea. "They have given research planning grants to 11 institutions to set up an international centre for CAM research," he added. And AVTAR had received a grant for research in the field of rheumatoid arthritis. Now they had submitted a proposal for a larger research grant of Rs. 120 crores through the Indian Council of Medical Research, to NIH.
