Exploring market for eri silk

M. Soundariya Preetha

Cheaper than regular cocoons but no assured market A feasibility study is on in State

COIMBATORE: Cocoon arrivals are up in this region and demand is also looking good. But here is another silk variety that needs market attention and support.

Eri Silk, a non-mulberry silk variety, extracted from worms reared on tapioca and castor leaves, is yet to find a market in the State. Now, the Regional Sericulture Research Station in Salem is exploring avenues for this.

The Joint Director of the station, S.M.H. Qadri, said that they started a pilot project in the State two years ago to study the feasibility of rearing this variety of silk worms here.

Initially farmers from Salem and Namakkal districts were identified, as tapioca cultivation was more in these areas.

The pilot project would go on for another year.

The feasibility had been established and the research station was exploring the marketing avenues to give a momentum to rearing of this variety.

For the last two years, the Central Silk Board through its unit in Salem and Chennai had been procuring this cocoon variety from the farmers and hence they had a guaranteed price. From this year, private parties would be involved.

The research station was in the process of identifying some buyers in Bangalore and Udumalpet.

They would be supplied small quantities of the eri silk cocoon and then the possibilities of tie-ups with farmers would be studied.

Mr. Qadri pointed out that this variety of non-mulberry silk could be used as a blend with wool.

It could also be used in making home furnishing materials. It was cheaper than the regular cocoons and only with an assured market could the rearing of the variety be promoted in the State. It was now popular in the North Eastern States, he said.
