Health Minister K.K.Ramachandran is a person who believes that social realities cannot be brushed aside when it comes to campaigning for rights. Responding to Mayor J. Chandra's appeal to young women for a crusade against dowry and extravaganza in marriage at a function, the Minister warned that such a campaign would have to contend with well-entrenched customs and beliefs. "Opposing the dowry system is easier said than done. The fact remains that a girl undertaking such a campaign may have to celebrate her `Shashtipoorthi' (60th birthday celebrations) as a spinster," he said.
