The declaration of national film awards on Wednesday did not bring much cheer to the Malayalam film industry this year. Except for the award for best supporting actress won by Sheela for her performance in Akale, directed by Shyama Prasad, and the award for the film with social relevance for Perumazhakaalam, directed by Kamal, Malayalam cinema did not get any notable awards. A prominent director of the mainstream cinema, who sought anonymity, made an honest comment about the `setback:' the directors are vying with one another to rehash films that were successful at the box-office.
