TRADITIONAL METHOD: Staging the Kalanattom.
KOCHI: Not many would prefer to open a new movement in the month of Karkidakom, believed to be the month of famine. But Mamankam, the cultural wing of Malabar Cultural Association, is doing it with a purpose. The movement will get going with performance of Seepothiyattom, Kalanattom and Vetanattom, folk art forms meant to counter the miseries of famine. Six artistes from Folk Land at Thrikkaripur in Kasaragod will perform at Kerala Fine Arts Society Hall on Friday the first of Karkidakom, marking the launch of Mamankam. In Seepothiyattom, Sree Bhagavathy or Seepothi is invoked to drive out Chetta Bhagavathy or Moosetta. Old-timers believe that the home and land will flourish if this ritual is performed. Senior Theyyam artiste Kelu Panicker will lead the performance. Vetanattom is performed by a small Theyyam, Aadivetan, at individual houses during Karkidakom. It is basically a ritual performed by Malaya community. Madhu Panicker, who won the title by donning a solo Theyyam, will lead the performance. The evening will wind up with Kalanattom, which is a popular art form in Kannur. Upendrarajan Panicker, whose claim to fame being his presentation of Kalankolam at the National Games in 1987, will present the ritual for Kochiites. Mamankam will be formally inaugurated before these performances by senior artist M.V. Devan and director of Mamankam R.K. Damodaran will deliver the introductory address.
