Kozhikode Corporation knows best how to adhere to the traditional Indian motto Athithi Devo Bhavah. The hospitality of the corporation was at its best during the three-day National Education Assembly held in Kozhikode recently. The event was held under the aegis of the All India Peoples Science Network (AIPSN) in association with the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The corporation generously served food for as many as 600 academicians and educationists who attended the event. The expenditure came up to Rs.1 lakh. "We did not mind the budget. It was a pleasure for us to treat them with sumptuous Keralite cuisine," says Mayor Thottathil Raveendran, who was also the chairman of the reception committee. The local body had sought permission from the Government to host the event. At a time when the Union Tourism Ministry is busy spearheading its Athithi Devo Bhavah programme to woo foreign tourists, the corporation feels that hospitality should begin at home, Mr. Raveendran says.
