SALEM: The City Police on Thursday seized about 100 autorickshaws, which were found carrying passengers exceeding the permissible limit. Following complaints that autorickshaws were carrying excess load and in the wake of an accident in which seven school kids, who were travelling in an autorickshaw were injured, the police had launched a drive against the autorickshaws that were overloaded with school children.
Rules violation
According to rules, autorickshaws were permitted to carry three passengers, excluding driver and share autos- five. During vehicle check, police personnel found autorickshaws carrying more than 10 children and seized them. The drivers were booked for operating with excess loads. The City Police would recommend to the Regional Transport Officer to take severe action against the drivers and owners, police sources said. Meanwhile, the City Police has decided to organise a consultative meeting at Hanging Garden at 11 a.m. on July 16 on the safety of school children travelling in autorickshaws. Public and principals of various schools can participate.
