PIL plea for steps to conserve water
|
NEW DELHI:
The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre and all States on a public interest litigation petition, which sought effective steps for conservation of rainwater, making it mandatory for all buildings with an area of over 200 square metres to have rooftop harvesting structures.
A Bench consisting of Justice Y. K. Sabharwal and Justice G. P. Mathur asked the governments to respond to the petition filed by an NGO, Tap-Rejuvenate Earth's Ecology and Environment, and a Delhi advocate.
The petitioners said that of the average rainfall of 1,170 mm the country received, 90 per cent went waste through drains and nullahs for lack of a water harvesting system.
A good section of the people did not have the means of drinking water.
Water-related diseases accounted for 80 per cent of all illnesses in the country.
The World Water Development Report clearly said that by the middle of this century, seven million people in 60 countries would face severe water scarcity.
Hence, the petitioners sought a direction to the Centre to order all States and their rural and industrial development authorities.
