ERODE: Employees of the Office of Joint Director of Agriculture have set up a mini-herbal garden on the office premises at Vidyanagar in Erode. Joint Director of Agriculture T.S.R. Ramakrishnan told The Hindu that the district administration and the Agriculture Department had urged farmers to raise herbal plants for good returns. He wanted employees to do something to help farmers get practical knowledge. Shelling out money from their pockets, the employees first levelled the office compound. They planted various types of herbs and employed a full-time gardener. Drip and sprinkler systems of irrigation was introduced. They raised herbal plants such as Antrographis Paniculala (a remedy for poisonous bites), Collies Aromaticus (for cough), Phagosteman (for skin diseases), Plumbago Indica, Euphopia (for protein contents) and Clerodeutrium. Once the plants are ready for use, SKM Mind and Health Care Trust will collect them. The Joint Director said every week a minimum of 100 farmers from various places in the district were visiting the office to get details on cultivation of medicinal plants.
