DISPLACED SLABS covering a stormwater drain in front of a shopping complex along a one-way route at the busy Chathiram bus stand in Tiruchi has opened the way to danger for pedestrians in a hurry. And, at night it proves to be more than just an irritation, as the risk of unsuspecting members of the public falling into the trap is high. The open pits are a cause of worry to the shop owners on the 30-yard stretch. For, it not only keeps the public at bay but also leaves a negative impression of the shops on the public. Even to a casual observer, it symbolises civic neglect on the part of the authorities as well as the public. Replacing the slabs in their original places only requires a few minutes of work. But then, it appears that the civic responsibility is an alien realm to the shop owners too. The primary culprits are the sanitary workers, who remove the slabs to clear the drains of accumulating filth and do not bother to place them back.
