CHARITY IN any form is a stepping-stone towards heaven. Fathimath Abdullah, a Maldivian tourist promoter, sponsored free meals for a day at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) when she came to Madurai for heart treatment with her relatives. She distributed free food to 150 patients who had come there for cancer or cataract treatments when she learnt about the MMHRC's free meals scheme for poor patients. The MMHRC has so far provided free meals to 3.78 lakh patients during the last 14 years, thanks to generous contributions from patients, well wishers and the hospital staff. Donations made towards the free meal scheme are exempted from tax under the Income Tax Act.
