ON THE one side authorities of the Archaeology Department have been working overnight to protect and preserve sites identified as monuments while on the other some irresponsible people tried to demean the significance of these monuments. One such ugly example could be seen at Konkar Puliangulam Hill near Madurai Kamaraj University. The site is declared a monument by the department. It is not easy for everyone to reach the site as climbing the hill is an arduous task. Taking advantage of the lack of security at the place, some people inscribed their names on the stones, which are famous for their ancient inscriptions. These writings could easily misguide a foreign visitor to the sites. Considering the historical significance of the place, anyone found damaging the monument should be caught and punished, said a research scholar.
