HUBLI: The students and staff of the Government Kannada Higher Primary Boys School at Anandnagar in Old Hubli had a pleasant surprise on Thursday. They had a VIP visitor in Rahul Gandhi, Youth Congress leader and Amethi MP. Mr. Gandhi talked to the students and listened to the lessons read out by them. The teachers and students of the schools were not aware of his proposed visit till Thursday morning. They had been told that Sudha Murthy, president of Infosys Foundation, and the Minister for Cooperation, R.V. Deshpande, would be visiting the school. Even though enough security measures were in place and barbed wire fence put around the school, they were under the impression that it may be because of the Minister's visit. Mr. Gandhi arrived in Hubli by a special aircraft. He reached the Government School around noon and spent about half-an-hour there. He interacted with the students in Hindi. He asked some of them to read out lessons from the textbooks. Then he asked them about the midday meal served to them by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) under the "Akshay Patra Yojana." Later, he served the meal to about 60 girls and boys and later ate with them. Mr. Gandhi also interacted with the teachers about the midday meal scheme and asked whether there was any increase in the number of students after the introduction of the scheme. The Principal of the school, Kamala R. Moolimani and the Vice-Principal, Uma M. Aigol, gave details about the interaction to newsmen later. Before leaving the venue, Mr. Gandhi sprung a surprise by breaking the security cordon provided by the Special Protection Group and went on to shake hands with the people who had been waiting to have a glimpse of him for hours. He later left for Haliyal in Uttar Kannada district to take part in another programme.
