PONDICHERRY: A good number of French nationals residing in Pondicherry and officials of the Pondicherry Administration today paid homage at the French Government maintained War Memorial on the 216th French Republic Day here on Thursday. The French Consul-General in Pondicherry Michel Seguy led the team of officials and others to pay homage at the statue of `Soldat Inconnu' in the War Memorial. The Secretary to the Health department of Pondicherry Administration, A.K. Chaturvedi (representing the Lt Governor of Pondicherry), the French Senator Christian Cointat and the two representatives in Paris based Assembly for Overseas French Nationals Lt Col Mouhamad Moustafa and R. Ezhilane along with representatives of various Associations of Retired French Civil and Military Personnel paid homage at the statue as a mark of respect to those who laid down lives for the freedom of France. The functionary of the Committee of `Foyer Du Soldat' Jean Coupoussamy compered the programme at the War Memorial. The band wing of the Pondicherry police played the Indian and French National songs. It was an official holiday on Thursday for all the French Government offices and institutions situated in Pondicherry in view of the celebration. Pondicherry was a French colony for nearly 250 years till it became part of Indian Union in1954. At a reception called `Fete Nationale' later in the evening on the lawns of the consulate, The Lt Governor of Pondicherry M M Lakhera, the Speaker of Pondicherry Assembly M D R Ramachandran, Senator from France Christian Cointat, the legislator of Pondicherry S P Sivakumar, the IG of Police P R Meena, delegates of different organizations and associations and the Archbishop of Pondicherry Antony Anandarayar participated. The Consul-General welcomed earlier those present and referred to `excellent cooperation' had been getting from Pondicherry Administration. He spoke first in English and then switched over to French.
