  • Sale of stamps in packs New Direct Post service

CHENNAI: Postmen in the State will soon don an additional role. They will also be "salesmen" of postal stamps. They will sell stamps in packs, made available in two denominations — Rs. 100 and 200.

The packs will be launched by Union Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran in Chennai on July 18. The envelopes of the packs carry images of stamps of leading national and regional personalities.

Vatsala Raghu, Chief Postmaster General (Tamil Nadu Circle), said: "stamps we are having at the field level will be distributed through the packs." The reverse side of every envelope will be utilised for advertisements. To address the long-felt requirement of sending A-4 sized papers, the department has decided to come out with long-sized envelopes. There is no change in the postage, which is Rs. 5 per envelope. Another service to be launched by the Minister next week is `Direct Post'. If a company or institution wants to distribute unaddressed articles like brochures, pamphlets, coupons and posters, it can hire the services of the postal department.

A minimum of 1,000 articles will be accepted at a time. For local articles weighing up to 20 grams, the rate will be Rs. 1.50, per piece. For distribution anywhere in the country, the charge will be Rs. 2. Five per cent discount will be offered for a volume of over 50,000 articles.

Chiefs of all State Postal Circles will meet here from Saturday to Monday to discuss issues concerning the department. One day has been devoted for business development.

The deliberations will be fruitful, as each circle has been given a target for marketing the department's premium products such as Speed Post, said Ms. Raghu. The department's officials from different States will discuss how to face the challenges ahead.
