Sirpi Literary Award announced

Chennai: Sirpi Foundation, a Pollachi-based literary organisation, has announced chosen Era Meenakshi, poet and founder-director of the Youth Education Centre at Auroville, has been chosen for the Sirpi Literary Award for her contribution to Tamil poetry.

It carries a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 and a certificate. Special awards will also be given to poet-writers, Thilaka Bhama, Palani Bharati, Akasamapattu Seshachalam and Alagu Nila, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, each.

The awards will be presented at Pollachi on August 13, said a release from the Foundation president, Sirpi Balasubramanian. — Special Correspondent

Court directs TNSTC bus to be impounded

Kancheepuram : The Kancheepuram Sub-Court staff impounded a bus of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Villupuram) , Kancheepuram region on Thursday.

The directive was issued after the Corporation failed to pay a compensation of Rs. 71,000 to Azhagesan of Arunkundram near Thirukazhukundram, despite an earlier direction given to this effect on September 2003 and the lapse of the grace period. The victim was injured after being hit by a STC bus on September 9, 1998. — Staff Reporter

Arrears for law examination

Chennai: The Madras University Syndicate has granted one more chance to law students in the third and fifth year who have exhausted the maximum permissible chances for clearing the exams. Students who appeared for the third year (N.S.S.R) and fifth year (Inted) examinations and have arrears can appear for the exams once more in November/December after paying a penalty of Rs. 7,500 in addition to the prescribed exam fee. Penalty fee should be in paid as demand draft drawn in favour of the Registrar, University of Madras, Chennai 600 005, said a release. — Special Correspondent

Orientation programme for U.S. bound students

CHENNAI: The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) will organise a pre-departure orientation session for Fall 2005 students in Chennai on July 22.

It will comprise discussions on academic and cultural aspects of life in the U.S. and offer practical tips to students. Students issued visas and on way to the U.S. can attend the programme. Financial accounting programme

Chennai: The Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) will conduct a two-week part time management development programme on "computerised financial accounting" at the Institute of Computer Accountants (ICA), Regional Office, Chennai -34 from August 1 to 11. Successful candidates will be awarded certificates from the Government of India.

Rebate on khadi products

CHENNAI: The State Government has allowed the Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board to offer 30 per cent discount on khadi, polyvestra and woollen varieties and 20 per cent discount on khadi silk varieties uniformly throughout the year, according to a release. — Special Correspondents

Woman drowns

ERODE: A woman drowned while she was washing her clothes on Thursday. According to the police, Murugammal (23), wife of Gopal of Chinniampalayam near Erode, was washing clothes in a rocky area, when she accidentally fell into the nearby pond. Fire and Rescue Services personnel removed the body from water. - Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

ERODE: Two persons were killed in a road accident on Thursday. According to the police, Divagar (21) and his friend Senthilkumar (25) of Gobichettipalayam were going on a motorcycle on Gobichettipalayam-Sathyamangalam main road, when a tractor hit the two-wheeler near Kasipalayam. Both sustained serious injuries and died at the Government Hospital, Gobichettipalayam. Kadathur police have registered a case of accident. - Staff Reporter

Jewels stolen

Nagercoil: The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons who gained entry into the house of Pushparaj, supervisor, Thiruvattar special panchayat, on Wednesday night.

According to sources, the miscreants who entered the house by breaking open windowpanes, decamped with 24 sovereigns of golden ornaments worth Rs.25,000 when Pushparaj and his family members were fast asleep. — Staff Reporter

Child labourers rescued

Tuticorin: A team of National Child Labour Project and Labour Department officials rescued three child labourers on Wednesday.

M. Nallaperumal, Project Director, NCLP, said that Petchimuthu (12) was rescued from a tailor shop, Mariraj from a tea stall and a girl from a grocery shop — all at Srivaikuntam. — Staff Reporter

Toddy seized: four held

Tuticorin: Four persons were arrested from different parts of the district for their alleged involvement in the sale of toddy during raids on Wednesday.

Official sources told pressmen that while Nagarjan (62), Thirupalkadal (47) and Ponusamy (51) were arrested from different parts of Satankulam, Lakshmannan (25) was taken into the custody from Thattarmadam.

Altogether 35 litres of toddy was seized. — Staff Reporter

Three arrested

Tuticorin: The police on Wednesday arrested three youths on the charge of attempting to murder Gandhiraj at Sawyerpuram near here.

Police said Chellakutti (22), Pattupandi (20) and Kumar (21) hit Gandhiraj with an iron rod in the wee hours of Wednesday due to enmity. The complainant suffered severe injuries and was hospitalised. — Staff Reporter

Warden suspended

Nagercoil: Collector Sunil Paliwal has placed the warden of Kuzuthurai Adi Dravidar welfare hostel under suspension for dereliction of duty.

According to sources, he inspected all Adi Dravidar welfare hostels in the district.

He inspected the hostel at Kalliyankadu near here and enquired about the welfare of the inmates, tasted the food prepared for the students and directed the authorities to ensure creation of adequate infrastructure.

When he inspected the hostel at Kuzuthurai, he came to know that its warden, M.Thommiha, had taken leave without applying for leave.

So, the Collector suspended him temporarily. He inspected hostels at Kulasekaram and Karunkal also. — Staff Reporter

Local holiday

NAGAPATTINAM: A local holiday has been declared for all Government offices in Nagapattinam district on July 18 in view of the Nagore Kandoori `Sandanakoodu' festival.

In lieu, July 23 will be a working day for all the Government offices in the district, according to a communication received from the Collector issued on Thursday. — Staff Reporter

Three-day drama fest

KARUR: The Department of Art and Culture and the Narada Gana Sabha, Karur, would jointly organise a three-day drama festival at Narada Gana Sabha, here, between July 21 and 23. The festival would feature three dramas, one on each day, according to the Assistant Director, Art and Culture, S. Gunasekaran. — Staff Reporter

Middle school upgraded

PERAMBALUR: The Government Middle School in Ezhumoor village in Kunnam taluk near here has been upgraded into a high school.

Inaugurating the high school classes on Thursday, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, A. Arunachalam, said that steps would be taken for construction of additional classrooms for the school.

The Collector, D. Vivekanandan, who presided over the function, said two more Government middle schools, one each in Rayampuram and Kaulpalayam had been upgraded. The Government High School in Anandavadi had been upgraded into a higher secondary school.

Earlier, Mr. Arunachalam gave away a computer to the school authorities. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 64.49 feet today. The inflow was 16,423 cusecs and the discharge, 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
