NEW DELHI: Team Prasanna Jayashankar emerged as the surprise winner of the women's title following a three-way tie in the Trial National basketball league but owed a great deal to Team Aparna Ghosh that unexpectedly brought down favourite Team Suman Sharma at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Thursday. In the men's section, Team Abbas Moontassir took the title in spite of losing its last league match 74-82 to Team Khushi Ram. Though the second placed Team Ajmer Singh also had two victories, Team Abbas Moontassir was adjudged the winner since it had won their league match. Earlier, calculators were out after three teams tied for the women's title. The tie was resolved after the scores of the matches involving Team Prasanna, Team Suman Sharma and Team Aparna Ghosh were taken into account. The results of the fourth team, Nandini Basappa that lost to these teams, were not considered. The calculations favoured Prasanna that had a net difference of +16, as compared to Suman Sharma's +8 and Aparna Ghosh's - 24. Team Prasanna whipped Team Nandini Basappa, clearly the weakest of the four combinations on view, 102-44 in the most one-sided match of the league. The last match of the day decided the men's runner-up with Team Ajmer Singh scoring over Team Ranbir Chopra by a 20-point margin. Later, the Basketball Federation of India secretary Harish Sharma announced that within six months, the first National League would be launched with eight men and four women teams.
