SUVA (FIJI): Fiji's army on Thursday played down speculation that it might overthrow the South Pacific nation's elected government if Parliament passes a bill allowing supporters of a 2000 coup to be pardoned and freed from prison. An army document addressed to a parliamentary committee examining the bill was leaked on Wednesday, inspiring news reports that army head Commodore Frank Bainimarama intended to remove the Government and set up a military regime if the legislation was passed. The army has condemned the legislation. The Fiji Law Society, Opposition parties, the U.S. Embassy in Fiji and many civil society groups also have criticised the bill. ``We are quite positive that there is not going to be a coup,'' army spokesman Capt. Neumi Leweni told The Associated Press. The armed forces were ``engaged in a peaceful campaign to democratically halt the passage of the bill through Parliament,'' he said. ``That's the best description ... of what we're doing.'' AP
