Milk supply to Kerala may be resumed soon

THENI: Milk supply to Kerala is expected to resume soon with veterinary doctors and scientists confirming that the incident of Bacillus anthracis, a gram positive bacteria, completely eradicated in the Theni belt.

Animal Husbandry joint director Natarajan said here on Thursday that the entire Theni belt had been covered under a vaccination programme. "Now the bacteria has been eliminated and the milk available is of high quality and pure."

The scare about anthrax had almost paralysed milk sales and two lakh litres of milk got stagnant after the Kerala Government reportedly advised local milk vendors not to procure milk from Tamil Nadu on July 11. Coimbatore: Meanwhile, cattle merchants in Pollachi on Thursday threatened to stop the movement of vegetables and other articles to Kerala going from Tamil Nadu if the ban was not lifted immediately. The merchants, who met at the shandy this afternoon, urged the Tamil Nadu Government to hold discussions with Kerala to solve the issue, since officials of the six districts in the State had confirmed total elimination of the bacteria, sources from Pollachi said.

The ban imposed by the Kerala Government on the entry of cattle and milk products from Tamil Nadu has resulted in the stoppage of hundreds of cattle in nearby Pollachi and also on checkposts. - PTI
