Extra coach on five trains today

BANGALORE: In order to clear waiting list and the extra rush, one extra three-tier second-class sleeper coach will be added to the following trains on Friday: Train No. 6526 Bangalore-Kanyakumari Express; Train No. 6221 Bangalore-Chennai Cauvery Express; Train No. 0684 Bangalore-Chennai Special Express; Train No. 7311 Chennai-Yeshwantpur-Vasco Express; and Train No. 6732 Bangalore-Tuticorin Express, according to a press release issued by South Western Railway. — Staff Reporter

Siemens bags contracts worth Rs. 325 crores

Bangalore: Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services has bagged contracts totalling approximately Rs. 325 crores from Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL).

Siemens has been awarded the engineering and procurement and commissioning contract (EPC) covering complete project management and turnkey electrification.

The Managing Director of Siemens Ltd., J. Schubert said, "It is heartening that the Bangalore international airport project, the first public-private partnership in this sector, has taken off where Siemens will be playing a major role. Once completed, this world-class airport will set the benchmark for new airports being planned in India." — Special Correspondent

Exhibition on supply chain management

Bangalore: For the economy to grow, the supply chain management (SCM) network has to be strengthened on a dynamic basis than on a static basis, said V.R.S. Natarajan, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML).

He was inaugurating the Supply Chain and Logistics Exposition (SCALE) organised by the Indian Institute of Materials Management here on Thursday. The need to reduce inventories, increase on-time deliveries and so on is essential to improve the bottom line of companies, he said.

The Vice-President of Wipro Infotech, K.S. Vishwanathan said the key ingredients in supply chain management are information engineering, communicating with key suppliers and automating systems. — Special Correspondent

Ex-MLA T.S. Mani passes away

Kolar: T.S. Mani, former legislator from Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), died at R.L. Jalappa Hospital in Kolar on Wednesday night. He was 65 and is survived by his wife and a daughter. Mr. Mani represented the KGF constituency as a Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate in the Legislative Assembly from 1984 to 1989.

S. Rajendran, MLA for KGF, and M Bakthavachalam, Vice-President of the Robertsonpet City Municipal Council and former legislator, have mourned the death of Mr. Mani. — Correspondent

Srinivasa Gowda bereaved

Kolar: Lakshmamma, mother of the Agriculture Minister, K. Srinivasa Gowda, died this afternoon at R.L. Jalappa Hospital in Kolar. She was 99.

She is survived by three sons, Mr. Srinivasa Gowda, who is the eldest.

Alangur R. Srinivas, Horticulture Minister, who is related to the Mr. Srinivasa Gowda, has mourned the death of Ms. Lakshmamma. K.H Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, in a statement issued here, has also mourned her death.

VHP to boycott Salman Khan's movies

BIJAPUR: The Vishwa Hindu Parishat and other Sangh Parivar organisations have decided to boycott all the movies of Salman Khan in the wake of a court verdict against him. In a joint statement released here today, the president of district unit of VHP, Prakash Kadechur, and secretary, Shivarudra Bagalkot, said their organisation will not allow screening of any movies of the star in the district, as he has been booked under Maharashtra Organised Crime Act. — Staff Correspondent

Four officials suspended

BIJAPUR: The district administration has suspended two doctors and two teachers on the charges of dereliction of duty with regard to the incident of 43 schoolchildren taking ill after consuming midday meal at Honwad near here recently. In a order here today, the Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Mohsin, who is in-charge chief executive officer of zilla panchayat, suspended D.M. Chauvan and S.Y. Shinde, headmasters, and P.S. Hadagali and Gangambika Patil, doctors of Honwad and Tikota primary health centres respectively. Though they had not applied for leave, the doctors were absent on that day.

Raids on gambling dens

BELLARY: The police during their raids on gambling dens for the past two days have seized stake amount of over Rs. 1.09 lakhs and have arrested 130 persons in this connection. Two teams raided around four clubs on Tuesday night and arrested 107 persons and seized stake amount of Rs. 63,000. The teams, which continued their raids on few more clubs in the city on Wednesday night, seized stake amount of about Rs. 46,000 and arrested 25 persons. — Staff Correspondent

World Population Day

BELLARY: The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Bellary branch, in association with the Information Department, will be observing World Population Day in a unique way. At a function to be held here on Friday, the members of self-help groups, who have emerged successful in becoming economically self-reliant, will be sharing their experience. DAVANGERE: Chandrashekar Bhat, Congress leader of Harpanahalli, welcomed the appointment of Mallikarjuna Kharge as the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. Mr. Bhat said that the party High Command had made a clever move by appointing Mr. Kharge, a non-controversial and backward class leader, who is acceptable to all.

Gamaka week

SHIMOGA: The 8th annual "gamaka week" will be observed here from July 15 to July 21 under the auspices of the Shimoga district branch of the Karnataka Gamakakala Parishad. The programmes will be held at six schools and at the Prasanna Ganapathy temple in Ravindranagar here. Senior and junior gamaka artistes will perform. As many as 20 memorial endowments have been promised for the programme, according to the general secretary, C.V Srimathi, of the local branch of the Gamakakala Parishat. — Special Correspondent

Attack on cable operator: 3 held

SHIMOGA: Police have arrested three persons in connection with the alleged assault on cable operator and reporter of a private TV channel, Srikanth Kamath, here on Tuesday night. It is stated that the incident occurred when Kamath was discussing some issues with other cable operators when Babu, Jaipal and Krishnamurthy barged in and reportedly assaulted him. Kamath was admitted to the private hospital.

Appeal to repair State highways

SHIMOGA: The Shimoga Bus Operators' Association has appealed to the Minister for Public Works, H.D. Revanna, to sanction funds for the repair of the State highways, which connects nearby districts.

It said the Karnataka Road Development Corporation, which has entered into an agreement with the Government for the maintenance of main roads for three years, has not commenced the repair works. — Special Correspondent

Motorcyclist killed

in accident

BHADRAVATHI: A motorcyclist was killed in an accident in Jedi Katte Cross near here on Tuesday. According to police, a KSRTC bus proceeding to Shimoga from Bagalkot was involved in a collision with a mini lorry. Kumara Naidu (45), who following the bus, rammed it. He was killed on the spot. — Correspondent

Woman murdered

MADIKERI: A 30-year-old woman was murdered by unidentified persons in her house in the New Extension area of Madikeri city on Thursday, according to police. The woman, identified as Prema, was found lying in apool of blood by her husband. She was rushed to the District Hospital where the woman died. Prema hailed from Kasargod district in Kerala. — Staff Correspondent
