YSR pays tributes to Durgabai Deshmukh

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, paid tributes to Padma Vibhushan Durgabai Deshmukh on her 96th birth anniversary on Thursday. In a press release, he described her as the "mother of social work in India," a legend in her time, a freedom fighter, able administrator, social reformer and a Parliamentarian, who was a source of inspiration to society because of her Gandhian principles and people-oriented services. - Staff Reporter

Miner dies in freak mishap

ADILABAD: Akkepalli Shankar, coal filler at Singareni's RK VII mine under the Srirampur division, died due to an accidental fall on Thursday morning. According to reports, the coal filler was entering the mine at around 8 a.m. when he accidentally fell. The head injuries sustained in the fall resulted in his death. - Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: The Andhra Pradesh Sports Authority (SAAP) has sanctioned opening of athletics, basketball, watersports academies in Karimnagar town from August this year, said the Collector, C Parthasarathi, here on Thursday. At a review meeting here, the Collector suggested constitution of a committee for procurement of necessary equipment and providing all facilities for sportspersons at the Ambedkar stadium. - Staff Reporter

Chief Minister extols Koneru Humpy

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday commended the chess wizard, Koneru Humpy, for her achievement in winning the prestigious North Urals Cup title at the 3rd International Women's Championship in Russia. Dr. Reddy said Koneru Humpy had made her country proud with her performance at the championship and hoped that she would bring more laurels to the nation in future. - Staff Reporter

Farmers launch relay fast

CUDDAPAH: Farmers launched relay fast before the Kasinayana MRO office on Thursday, demanding expeditious payment of crop insurance. The CPI leader, Abdul Khader, lamented that ryots had become indebted due to successive drought for five years. The TDP mandal unit president, Rajamanohar Reddy, charged the State Government with neglecting farmers and hence farmers continued to commit suicide. Another TDP leader, B. Ramana Reddy, sought remunerative price for cotton crop. He demanded waiver of bank loans, as ryots were hard-pressed with rainfall deficiency and drought. - Staff Reporter

Postman ends life on swindling charge

ANANTAPUR: The branch postmaster of Bandlapalli post office in Kothacheruvu mandal, Balaraju (53), committed suicide at Kothacheruvu on Thursday, allegedly after the postal authorities detected swindling of about Rs. 1.30 lakhs of postal savings in the post office. His wife, Laxmidevi (46) also attempted suicide but was saved. According to the police, the couple was found lying unconscious near Kothacheruvu bus stand. When they were taken to the PHC, Balaraju was declared brought dead. His wife was undergoing treatment and was stated to be out of danger. They had consumed pesticide. - Staff Reporter

`Indira Megha Madhanam'

HYDERABAD: The cloud-seeding programme in the State has been named after Indira Gandhi as "Indira Megha Madhanam."

The announcement came through the daily bulletin issued by the Rain-Shadow Area Development Department listing out results of the cloud-seeding operations. There are already several schemes in the name of the late Prime Minister. - Special Correspondent

Statistical officer in ACB net

KURNOOL: The Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) officials trapped the Deputy Statistical Officer at the Revenue Divisional Office in Nandyal on Thursday. According to reports, the officer allegedly demanded money for issuing direction to the MRO for birth certificate of the daughter of Ramasubba Reddy at Chinnakandukur in Allagadda mandal.

Two kids drowned

KURNOOL: Two children--Pedda Venkateswarlu (7) and Chinna Venkateswarlu (6)--were drowned in a well at Mallepalli in Veldurthi mandal of Kurnool district on Wednesday evening.

According to reports, the kids went to an isolated well to collect water and accidentally drowned. The bodies were fished out on Thursday.

Health newsletter launched

KURNOOL: The GVR Children Hospital launched "GVR Littles News'' here on Thursday.

The president of the District Drug Dealers Association, M. Ramakrishna Rao, and the secretary, Krishna Mohan, formally launched the newsletter. As part of health education campaign, the hospital planned to bring out a newsletter every quarter.

Plastic surgery unit opened

Nellore: The health services in the Government Headquarters Hospital, Nellore, got a boost when the facility of plastic surgery was made available and was opened amidst much fanfare by the MLA, Anam Vivekananda Reddy.

Mr. Reddy congratulated the surgeon, M. Venkateswara Reddy, for his initiative in making plastic surgery popular. - Staff Reporter
