A partnership on ecology

NEW DELHI: In a path-breaking initiative aimed at restoring the ecological security and environmental protection of degraded mined out areas of steel factories owned by the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), the public sector undertaking has now entered into a partnership with the Central Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, and Delhi University.

Under the agreement signed on Wednesday, Rs.3 crores has been made available to Delhi University's Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystem (CEMDE), over a period of five years, with SAIL's contribution being Rs. 90 lakhs. In the first phase of the programme, the CEMDE will rehabilitate the mined out areas of various captive mines of steel factories owned by SAIL in different States. Foundation laid for underpass

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, on Thursday laid the foundation stone of an underpass at Prem Bari near Wazirpur depot in North-West Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit said her Government was committed to developing the Capital into a world-class city with all infrastructure facilities for the convenience of domestic and foreign tourists. She said a number of mega development projects had been completed and many more were in the pipeline.

The underpass will be constructed by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation by adopting new technologies.

Role of media in AIDS awareness

NEW DELHI: A national seminar on "Role of Media and Society on HIV/AIDS" was organised by the Multiple Ideas for Social Service in Our Nation (MISSION) at the Constitution Club here on Thursday.

The Head of Department of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Pradeep Mathur, who was the chief guest, spoke about the sharp increase in the number of AIDS patients in the country.

"The media must play a vital role to bring about HIV/AIDS awareness. MISSION should take feedback from society to bring about awareness about the disease," added Mr. Mathur.

Pact to finance farmers

NEW DELHI: The State Bank of India (SBI) and National Seeds Corporation Limited have entered into an agreement to finance the farmers for seed production under contract farming.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Chief General Manager of SBI, Anup Banerji, and the Managing Director of National Seeds Corporation Limited, B.B. Pattanaik, in the Capital on Wednesday.
