Kochi Bureau
KOCHI: The Managing Director of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) G. C. Gopala Pillai has taken charge as the managing director of Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT). Mr. Pillai took charge of the fertiliser company from S. Balan, who is also the chairman and managing director of Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers, Mumbai. Mr. Balan was looking after FACT's day-to-day working after P. R. Balasubramanyam retired as the MD a year ago. Mr. Pillai is the 17th Managing Director of the company and can continue till 2009. Dr. Pillai who brings with him over three decades of experience in various capacities managing public sector undertakings in the State has his task cut out. He comes at a time there are the stirrings of a revival in the ailing fertilizer giant that is looking to increased export of ammonium sulphate, brisk sale of its fertilizer products backed by a good monsoon and higher caprolactam production.
However, the most immediate issue before the new MD would be getting the Union Government to approve a revival package for the company. The package, now before the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE), has sought conversion of part of FACT's liabilities into Government equity.
Caprolactam plant
Meanwhile, it is learnt that FACT's process collaborator for its caprolactam plant, DSM Group of the Netherlands, has shown interest in joining hands with the fertilizer company to double the capacity at its 50,000-tonne caprolactam plant.
However, FACT sources said that the proposal was at a preliminary stage.
