GULBARGA: The North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) has secured the top position among all the State Road Transport Corporations in the country with respect to fleet utilisation and fuel efficiency. The Transport Research Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which conducted the review of the performance of the State Road Transport Undertakings for the period from October to December 2004, in its report released in the first week of July said under the Operational Productivity Parameters, which includes fleet utilisation, vehicle productivity, fuel efficiency, staff productivity, and occupancy ratio, NEKRTC has recorded cent per cent fleet utilisation among all the SRTCs in the country. The North Bengal State Transport Corporation has been ranked last with 47.14 per cent fleet utilisation. Official sources told The Hindu here on Thursday that the review also revealed the NEKRTC, which had won the first prize in the category of fuel efficiency last year, has once again secured the first position with fuel efficiency of 5.4 km per litre. The lowest fuel efficiency was recorded by Tripura Road Transport Corporation (3.58 km per litre). Even when compared to the fuel efficiency recorded by the transport companies, the performance of NEKRTC is better. Among the companies, the highest fuel efficiency of 5.11 km per litre was recorded by Tamil Nadu State Transport Company (Madurai, Dindigul and Virudhunagar regions) and lowest by Metro Transport Corporation of Chennai (3.6 km per litre). Under the vehicle productivity parameter, the review pointed out that the highest level of vehicle productivity of operation by a single bus on a day, the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) topped with 378.88 km. The Tripura RTC recorded the lowest with 86.51 km. Sources said under staff productivity of average revenue earnings, the PEPSU RTC achieved highest staff productivity among the SRTCs and Tripura RTC recorded the lowest. Among the transport companies, the State Express Transport Company of Tamil Nadu topped with 72.48 km, and lowest by Metro Transport Company of Chennai with 30.42 km. The review also pointed out that there was a marginal increase of 0.09 per cent in the number of accidents in December 2004, when compared to the same period in 2003. The total number of fatal accidents also increased from 894 in December 2003 to 898 in December 2004.
