Students oppose semester system

Staff Correspondent

`The university is ill-prepared to adopt the system at this stage'

BIJAPUR: Different student organisations have opposed the introduction of semester in Karnatak University from this academic year.

Members of the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) and the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) took out a protest march and staged a dharna in front of Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday. They raised slogans against the State Government and university.

Addressing the gathering, the vice-president of AIDYO's State unit, B. Bhagwan Reddy, and the chief of AIDSO's district unit, Mallikarjun, said the university is ill-prepared to adopt such a system at this stage, and feared it may provide room for exploitation of students by the faculty members.

The protesters handed over a memorandum addressed to the Governor to the Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Mohsin, and threatened to intensify their agitation if the system is introduced.

ABVP warning

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad held a seminar here on Thursday and adopted a resolution opposing the semester system. Retired principals, S.G. Karabantanal and S.S. Kanamadi, principals of different colleges, A.J. Kulkarni, S.I. Maitri, and V.V. Malagi, and other senior educationists stressed the need for a State-wide debate and extensive preparation before the introduction of the system. All affiliated colleges and student community should be taken into confidence before arriving at a decision, they felt.

H. Venkatesh said the university introduced the system in 1978 and withdrew it after realising the shortcomings in the system.
