LAST JOURNEY: The hearse carrying the body of the former Chief Minister P.K. Vasudevan Nair arriving at the Press Club Maidan in Kollam on Thursday.
KOLLAM: Hundreds of people, from all walks of life, gathered at the Press Club Maidan here to pay their last respects to the former Chief Minister P.K. Vasudavan Nair, who died on Tuesday. The hearse, run by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, carrying the body arrived here at 2.40 p.m., more than an hour behind schedule. The hearse was stationed at the maidan for more than an hour for the people to pay their last respects. The Communist Party of India leaders D. Raja, A.B. Bardhan and Veliyam Bhargavan accompanied the body. The cortege resumed its journey at 3.45 p.m. Even at that time, there were huge crowds still waiting to a catch a glimpse of the departed leader. Among those who place wreaths on the body are Minister for Labour Babu Divakaran; the MPs N.K. Premachandran, P. Rajendran and Chengara Surendran; Eravipuram MLA A.A. Aziz; Mayor Sabida Beegum; District Panchayat President Aisha Potti; District Collector B. Sreenivas; the former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, MP; the theatreperson O. Madhavan; CPI district president K.R. Chandra Mohan; Communist Party of India (Marxist) district president K. Rajagopal; District Congress Committee president Sooranad Rajashekaran; National Congress (Indira) district president K. Karunakaran Pillai; the Communist Marxist Party leader M.H. Shariyar; Kerala Shabdam Editor B.A. Rajakrishnan; the Centre of Indian Trade Unions leader N. Padmalochanan; the Bharatiya Janata Party leader Cherikonan Gopan; and the People's Democratic Party leader Kollurvila Nazimuddin.
