KURNOOL: The Irrigation Advisory Board (IAB) here on Thursday resolved to reopen the Tungabhadra Low Level Canal (TLLC) immediately. Any delay in reopening the canal would push the paddy crop into the winter affecting the yield. The district Collector, Vikas Raj, who chaired the meeting, said the Tungabhadra Board would be asked to release the water immediately. Water will reach Adoni and Yemmiganur areas in a week. The Superintending Engineer, Jalandar, said the level in the TB dam reached 1609 ft accounting for a storage of 38 tmc ft in the reservoir. The Yemminganur MLA, Yarrakota Kesava Reddy, requested the authorities to take measures to close the sluices meant for Rabi season. Unauthorised drawing of water through Rabi sluices was causing water shortage in tail-end areas. The Nandyal MP, S.P.Y. Reddy, and MLA, S. Mohan Reddy, insisted that water be released to KC canal from the Velugodu reservoir to raise paddy nurseries. The irrigation officials said 1.9 tmc ft was available in the reservoir out of which, 1.6 tmc ft could be drawn at the rate of 500 cusecs for 34 days. Water would be distributed among the Telugu Ganga, KC Canal and the Kundu river. The Kurnool MLA, M.A. Gafoor, insisted that the vent in the KC canal barrage at Sunkesula be closed immediately to save the ayacut.
