ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur telecom district of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has decided to offer wireless in local loop (WLL) phones in the villages under telephone exchanges which have been burnt by naxalites. The decision has been taken, as the police have not been responding to their request for clearance for restoring the burnt exchanges.
Communication link
The General Manager of Anantapur telecom district, Md. Nayeemuddin, told The Hindu on Thursday that they would try to cover as many such villages as possible with WLL services. He hoped that about 90 per cent of about 150 such affected villages would get communication link with WLL phones soon. The customers who were not defaulters till the date of burning of exchanges concerned would be given the WLL connections, he said. They had instructions to revive the exchanges burnt by naxalites only with an assurance (clearance) from the police, which the latter were reportedly not interested in extending, he explained. They had, in fact, restored an exchange at Marutla, which was burnt by naxalites, at their own risk. Earlier, a couple of other exchanges at MPR dam, Gunipalli were revived in the same fashion. The 14 exchanges, which were burnt are Nagasamudram, Kuntimaddi, Amidyala, Nuthimadugu, Gunipalli, Yerraguntla, Jellipalli, Kadamalakunta, Muthuvakuntla, Peruru, Tagarakunta, R.Venkatapuram, Pullarevu and Mamillapalli.
