MANGALORE: The Joint Director of the Social Welfare Department, Chandrashekar, has expressed his dismay over the dilapidated condition of the girls' hostel at the Kudmul Ranga Rao Road in Mangalore and has promised to look into the matter. This residents of the hostel complained that they found the place unsafe, particularly in the rainy season. Mr. Chandrashekar, who was earlier an officer in the Social Welfare Department, said the hostel building was handed over to the zilla panchayat some years ago and it is now their responsibility to maintain the it. He said he will order an estimation to be drawn for repair works. The Social Welfare Officer said Rs. 4 lakhs has been allotted for the maintenance of hostels in the district. Of this, Mangalore taluk will receive Rs. 2 lakhs, while Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia and Bantwal taluks will receive Rs. 50,000 each.
