UDHAGAMANDALAM: Revenue officials in the Nilgiris have commenced work to identify beneficiaries of the tea growers' subsidy scheme announced recently by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa. S The Nilgiris Collector, C. Vijayaraj Kumar, told reporters here on Thursday that the work was expected to be completed within 10 days. The subsidy of Rs. 2 per kg of green leaf subject to a ceiling of 1,400 kg per acre would be given to all eligible farmers. Steps would be taken to ensure that the implementation of the scheme went off without a hitch. The `Porangadu Seemai Nala Sangam' representing the Badagas in about 120 villages in Kotagiri and surrounding areas had said that the recent gesture of the Chief Minister had come as a shot in the arm. In a letter to the Chief Minister the association general secretary, A. Kari Gowder, said that since some of the tea factory owners were unscrupulous many small growers had not benefited from a subsidy scheme implemented earlier. He expressed the hope that the authorities would ensure that all the eligible growers would benefit from the present scheme. The AIADMK district secretary, K. Anantha Krishnan, in a statement here on Thursday said the subsidy scheme to help farmers who were in distress should not be politicised.
